When writing Moving Pictures, I relied heavily on John Bengston's first two books, Silent Echoes (Buster Keaton) and Silent Traces (Charlie Chaplin). Just this past weekend, I found out that he put out another one last year -- Silent Visions (Harold Lloyd).
These books are fascinating. Bengston goes through silent movies and shorts, locates where they were filmed and then finds the same places now. Especially in Los Angeles, the scenery has changed considerably, which makes it even more interesting to see how things have changed in 90 years.
I can't recommend these books enough.
